Patient Educational Principles

Description

Educating patients effectively is a skill every health care professional should possess. Normally, health care professionals are instructed to teach patients; yet no one teaches the teacher the principles to develop the skills to educate patients. This course will provide understanding of the skills necessary to adapt to the many patient education settings.

Objectives

1.    Review the principles of patient education along with methods of teaching.
2.    Define readability and discuss the ethical issues regarding readability.
3.    Describe patient education for the purpose of informed consent.
4.    Discuss the increasing need for cultural competence in patient education.
