Sleep Disordered Breathing and Comorbidities

Population surveys suggest the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is high and increasing; and that risk factors and outcomes differ between sexes. Untreated OSA has serious and life-shortening consequences. Knowledge, recognition & early intervention of OSA & comorbidities reduce such consequences.

Description

This topic will review and provide current information regarding Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) (characterized by partial or complete recurrent upper airway obstruction) during sleep and the potential resulting comorbidities. OSA brings many adverse consequences, such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiac and encephalic alterations, behavioral, among others, resulting in a significant issue in public health care due to high financial and social impact. The importance of knowledge and early intervention proves useful as the incidence of patients with comorbidities associated with OSA have been increasing consistently and present significant influence in natural disease history.

Objectives

  • Define Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) including Obstructive Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome (OSAHS).
  • Review the types of comorbidities found in SDB.
  • Discuss OSAHS treatment and compliance with treatment outcomes.
