Understanding Oxygen Conserving Devices

Description

Supplemental oxygen, as prescribed by a physician, is the only way for the oxygen-dependent patient to achieve a more active and fulfilling lifestyle. Thus, over the years many equipment manufacturers have developed innovative products to help the patient meet their oxygen need. Because of the number of available devices, it is important to understand the function of the equipment and how it can meet or may not meet patient needs in oxygen therapy. This understanding will help provide the oxygen dependent patient with better oxygenation which will assist the patient in mobility, and hopefully, a better quality of life.

Objectives

  1. Define the “gold standard” of Long Term Oxygen Therapy.
  2. Describe the how the factors of Dilution, Dead Space and Pooling effect the delivery of oxygen.
  3. Discuss oxygen delivery variation when using continuous flow therapy versus pulse delivery devices.
  4. Outline the various ways oxygen delivery can be conserved during the application of oxygen therapy.
